It’s not always easy to know if you should seek out a counselor for couples therapy. Maybe you have had a previous bad experience, or have heard that people only come to couples therapy to break up, or feel that the two of you should be able to solve your own problems.
Here are reasons NOT to come to couples therapy (at least with me): you want me to fix your partner, because THEY are the problem; one or both of you is an active addict or alcoholic; or you just want a witness to your screaming fights and don’t want to change that behavior.
Here are reasons to come to couples therapy: you love your partner, but the two of you aren’t able to feel loving; you have difficulty communicating and are open to suggestions about how to change that; you want another point of view; you hope to be better partners.
Make appointments with two people, and choose someone you feel comfortable with. You should feel some benefit soon.
